Glowsticks are fun and pretty versatile in their uses; use them for parties, concerts, decorations or as safety beacons....or you could make your own fireflies with them!
The concept’s pretty simple, but the resulting firefly looks great and making it will keep the kids occupied during the summer break... All you need are
· 9 x 12-inch coloured paper (thick but not card)
· 500 ml pop bottle (green looks best)
· Sellotape
· 2 coloured pipe cleaners
· Pencil
· Tracing paper
· Scissors
· Thick white crafts glue
· Pom-poms
· Fluorescent glowstick
Instructions:
1. Fold the coloured paper in half lengthways and tear it along the fold. Wrap one half around the bottle top for the bug’s throat and tape it in place.
2. Wrap a pipe cleaner around the bottle neck and twist it to make antennae. Cut the other pipe cleaner into thirds and glue the pieces onto the sides of the bottle for the legs.
3. Trace circle and wing patterns onto tracing paper. Cut out the patterns. Trace around the patterns onto the coloured paper, cutting one circle face and two wings. Cut out the shapes. Glue the wings to the throat. Glue the circle on the bottle cap for a face. Add pom-poms for the eyes. Let the glue dry.
4. Activate the glowstick and place it inside the bottle.
There you have it....a fabulous homemade firefly...enjoy!
