Romantic Graffiti Glows in Sheffield

A mysterious piece of graffiti in Sheffield's Grade II listed Park Hill flats has been lit up in glowing neon as the flats celebrate their 50th year. The romantic message reads "I love you will you marry me" and has become so famous and central to the estate that developers Urban Splash have not only decided to keep the graffiti, but have lit it up this week, turning it into a glowing neon sign!

If you're local to Sheffield or even if you've passed through you'll have noticed the towering Park Hill flats that sit on the hill as you come into the city. The message is scrawled across a bridge connecting two towers thirteen stories up and has become so famous throughout the city that the bridge has become known as the "I love you bridge". Even Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner sported a t-shirt featuring the iconic graffiti during gigs a couple of years ago!

The glowing graffiti has certainly been taken to heart by the community being described as "an iconic symbol of hope and romance central to the heritage of the flats" and has sparked the curiosity of freelance producer and Sony Radio Academy Award winner Frances Byrnes who is planning a documentary on the graffiti due to be aired on BBC Radio 4 this summer. Byrnes says "“It’s so high and there’s no way it could have been written other than by risking your life climbing over the edge, and I think that’s incredible. I’ve met so many people since then who have said they always wondered who wrote it, and why, and what happened, and I just thought I should try and find out.”

Whatever the result of the documentary, I'll bet the original graffiti artist had no idea that his proposal would make it into lights! Here's hoping that she said yes!
