Look to the Skies This Week for Spectacular Meteor Showers

Watch the skies this week for fabulous light displays courtesy of the Perseids meteor shower. Set to peak this Thursday, the clear night skies will allow the UK to witness as many as 100 shooting stars an hour during an amazing show with meteors hitting the Earth at 140,000 mph before they burn up in our atmosphere.

An annual event named the Perseids (because the meteors appear to come from the direction of the constellation of Perseus), this year’s is tipped to be even more beautiful than usual because this week’s new moon means that there’s no moonlight overpowering the light given off by the meteors and spoiling the show.

The Vice President of the Society for Popular Astronomy Robin Scagell has tips to get the best view..."Make yourself comfortable in a deckchair under a clear sky, away from the street lights, and you should soon see a few [shooting stars] streaking across the sky."

The Perseids are an incredible natural show to watch which amplified by the new moon will look outstanding; I’ll definitely be cosying up in the garden this Thursday hoping to catch a view!
