City of York Celebrates Life with a Mass Chinese Lantern Launch

A group of organisers in the City of York responsible for a recent mass pillow fight and an upcoming Hippy Picnic amongst other fun occasions in the city have confirmed their next big event...The Night of a Thousand Lanterns.

The idea is to gain as many people as possible over York to light up the city by releasing Chinese Lanterns at 9:30pm on Sunday August 29th.

The group has quite a following in the city and on social networking site Facebook and so the event promises to be quite a success; and as the Chinese have known for centuries, there’s nothing quite as visually spectacular as a mass lantern launch.

Martyn Clayton from the York Flash Mob group says "The idea is that people can light a lantern in their own back garden or in a public space at the same moment as other people are doing so across the city and beyond." The group have created a blog so that you can tell all as to why you’re taking part..."We’d also like to know a little more about what you were wishing for or who you were commemorating both before and after the event"

The group have sought clearance from the Civil Aviation Authority who’ve granted permission to go ahead confirming "On a Sunday evening around York there shouldn’t be an issue with aviation" and so with safety fears aside, there’s no reason not to take part.

This is a fantastic fun and meaningful event to be part of and so if you’re from York, why not join the group in letting off lanterns to celebrate life, whether it’s a birth, a birthday, a wedding, remembering someone special, you’re moving on or just celebrating all that’s good on the bank holiday weekend.
