Solar energy is a natural resource that’s not limited to any one place on the Earth and so it’s only natural then that solar technology be used to provide light and power to those in the developing world.
Many developing communities use kerosene burning lamps to provide light in their home, however indoor air pollution caused by kerosene fumes currently kills around 1.5 million people per year.
A solar lantern company was recently awarded the Ashden Award for Sustainable Energy for “its passion and dedication to the cause of ridding the developing world of the health and pollution problems associated with the use of kerosene lighting”.
Over 70% of sub Saharan Africa has no access to electricity, why not then provide them with solar powered lanterns that cost little to make, but can make a massive difference to their quality of life and cut the need for deadly kerosene?
The company D Light Design have been working with the Rural Energy Foundation to bring solar lighting to over a million people in 32 countries, and so far the REF has helped bring solar lighting to around 300,000 people in 9 African countries.
By bringing sustainable energy to the developing world such as solar power, we’re paving the way to a lesser need for carbon fuels whilst massively improving the quality of life in these countries and giving them the opportunities and resources to help sustain themselves.
